Proper Tree Pruning

Topping a tree causes weak regrowth and decay. Here's how proper trimming and pruning keeps trees healthy, safe and natural looking.

Every tree company says it trims trees. The difference between a healthy cut and a hack job shows up years later.

What topping does

Topping cuts main branches back to stubs. The tree responds with dense, weakly attached sprouts that break easily, and the large wounds invite decay. A topped tree often becomes more dangerous, not less.

What proper pruning does

Proper tree trimming and pruning removes selected branches at the right point so the tree can seal the wound. Common goals include:

  • Deadwood removal to stop limbs falling unexpectedly
  • Canopy thinning to improve airflow and sunlight penetration
  • Crown raising to clear roofs, driveways and walkways
  • Clearance pruning away from structures

How often to prune

Most mature shade trees benefit from pruning every three to five years. Younger trees need more frequent structural pruning.

When pruning isn't enough

If a tree has serious decay or structural defects, tree removal may be the safer choice. A Certified Arborist consultation can help you decide.
