Most trees give plenty of warning before they fail. The trouble is that the signs are easy to miss until a storm rolls through. Here are the seven we look for first when we assess a tree around Freeburg and Belleville.
1. Large dead branches
Dead limbs are brittle and can drop without wind. If a big portion of the canopy has no leaves in summer, the tree may be declining. Sometimes trimming and pruning solves it; sometimes the tree is too far gone.
2. Cracks and splits in the trunk
Deep vertical cracks, or a split where two main stems meet, weaken the tree's structure. These often fail under ice or high wind.
3. A new or worsening lean
A tree that has always leaned is often stable. A tree that starts leaning, especially with soil heaving on one side, may have root failure.
4. Fungus at the base
Mushrooms or shelf fungus near the base usually point to internal decay in the roots or lower trunk.
5. Hollow or soft wood
Cavities, soft spots and sawdust-like debris mean the inside of the tree is breaking down.
6. Branches over the roof or lines
Even a healthy tree can be a hazard if it overhangs your home. Removal or careful pruning prevents damage.
7. Storm damage
Hung-up limbs and twisted trunks after a storm are dangerous. Call our 24/7 Storm Hotline at (618) 772-4784.
What to do next
If you recognise any of these signs, ask for an assessment. Our tree removal service uses careful rigging and includes full cleanup, and every job starts with a detailed estimate.
